Gunmen kill at least 20 in Indian-administered Kashmir: Police

Police say multiple tourists suffer gunshot wounds in attack that comes during heavy military crackdown in region.

Armed men opened fire on a group of tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, killing at least 20 people, according to Indian police, in one of the deadliest attacks there in recent times.

Police said multiple tourists received gunshot wounds in the “terror attack” on Tuesday while they were visiting Baisaran meadow, some 5km (3 miles) from the disputed region’s resort town of Pahalgam.

One of the deceased individual has been identified as hailing from Shivamogga in Karnataka and worked as a realtor. NDTV reported that he was allegedly shot in front of his wife and son.

According to police sources, at least two of the casualties are in a critical state. The terrorists reprotedly launched an attack on tourists at Baisaran, a secluded meadow in Pahalgam. The victims of the incident have been promptly transported to the hospital.

“Our reports say that two-three militants appeared and opened indiscriminate fire at the tourists at Baisaran,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Baisaran, a tourist hotspot that can only be reached on foot, tends to be bustling with visitors during the peak tourism season.

Right after the incident occurred, law enforcement officers, together with military and paramilitary personnel, hurried to the scene. Their mission was twofold: to ensure the safe evacuation of the tourists present and to initiate a manhunt for the insurgents responsible for the attack.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed his condemnation of the attack and subsequently had a phone call with Home Minister Amit Shah while in Jeddah. Shah is set to reach Srinagar soon.

In the after-attack videos circulating on social media, women can be seen seeking help to save their husband's lives. A woman can be seen saying, "Since he was not Muslim, they shot him dead."

The statement suggests religious motive behind the killing. J&K has long been affected by Islamic radicalism. The attack comes at a time when United States Vice President J D Vance is on a visit to India.
